How to connect Jira

These steps are for Jira Cloud. You need the Administer Jira global permission.

Step 1: Create an Integration

  1. Go to your organization’s Integrations page.
  2. Click Add Integration and select Jira.
  3. You’ll receive a unique Webhook URL. Copy it.

Step 2: Add the Webhook in Jira

  1. In Jira, click the Settings (gear) icon, then System.
  2. Under Advanced, select WebHooks and click Create a WebHook.
  3. Give it a name (e.g., “Hookfire”) and paste your Hookfire webhook URL.
  4. Optionally add a JQL filter, such as project = APP, to limit which issues it fires for.
  5. Under Issue, tick created, updated and deleted. Under Comment, tick created.
  6. Leave Exclude body unticked: Hookfire needs the body to write the notification.

Step 3: Set a Signing Secret (recommended)

  1. In the Secret field, click Generate secret or type a long random string.
  2. Copy it before you save: Jira does not show it again.
  3. Click Create, then paste the secret into the Signing Secret field on your Hookfire integration page.
  4. Jira then signs every delivery with HMAC-SHA256 in the X-Hub-Signature header, and Hookfire verifies it automatically.

The secret is optional in Jira. Without one Hookfire still accepts deliveries, but cannot tell them apart from anyone else who has the URL.

Step 4: Subscribe to Events

On your Hookfire integration page, toggle on the events you want to receive push notifications for.

Issue updated fires on every change to an issue. On Max you can add a payload rule to narrow it, for example changelog.items.0.field is status for status changes only. A JQL filter on the Jira side works too.

Step 5: Test

Click the Test button next to an event on your integration page, or create an issue in a project the webhook covers.

Supported Events

Event Description
jira:issue_created An issue was created
jira:issue_updated An issue was changed
jira:issue_deleted An issue was deleted
comment_created Someone commented on an issue

Tapping a notification opens the issue at https://<your-site>.atlassian.net/browse/<KEY>.
